“The Employee Free Choice Act threatens our economy and basic freedoms. That’s why the Save Our Secret Ballot campaigns being waged in states across the country are so tremendously important. The legal and political strategies behind the SOS Ballot initiatives are well thought out and deserve our support.”
Save Our Secret Ballot! “In Arkansas, Arizona, and Missouri, ballot initiatives are being organized to write secret union ballots into the state Constitutions. In Nevada and Utah, Republican state legislators will force the issue onto the November ballot. If they succeed, and if the Democrats don't actually pass EFCA, it'll be a big and unexpected defeat for the labor movement. Democrats always knew that EFCA would be a hard sell, and they didn't want to fight an election over it.”
Fighting Card Check -- And Winning “The EFCA is a drastic and dangerous measure, but fortunately grassroots organizations are mobilizing for a legal fight to stop it. One group, SOS Ballots (Save Our Secret Ballots), is pushing for constitutional amendments in several states, as well as Washington, D.C., that would require secret ballot voting "where state or federal law requires elections for public office or public votes on initiatives or referenda, or designations or authorizations of employee representation."
Save Our Secret Ballot Takes on Employee Free Choice Act “Istook’s fervor on the issue is perhaps indicative of the mentality the entire conservative movement should more fully embrace: “Let’s stand up for the right thing regardless,” he said. “That’s the way you win people over.”
Discard 'Undemocratic' Card Check “Save Our Secret Ballot has begun a campaign at the state level - already organized in 10 states - to fight EFCA by getting language on state referenda in 2010 to preserve secret ballot elections in union organizing, and we hope they will succeed.”
Local Politics Key to Card Check “By attacking the issue on the local level, card check opponents are also forcing union advocates to spend millions of dollars to resist state constitutional movements…and there is growing public awareness of the impact card check could have, which is probably driving the Democratic timetable for starting the legislative process. Democrats know that if they wait too long and allow the voters to express their will, the public will come out squarely against the EFCA.”
Preserving Secret-ballot Votes “Save Our Secret Ballots is a reasonable response to this unfair legislation. It's a simple, sacrosanct position: Only through secret-ballot elections can voters make their choices in absolute privacy and be insulated from intimidation and retaliation. Such protections offset the bullying tactics of organized labor.”
"Save Our Secret Ballots" Group Includes Arizona “Though a secret ballot election isn't perfect, there is no better way to vote on something if you want to reveal the voters' true feelings. The early timing of the anti-union group's announcement is no doubt meant to influence lawmakers in Washington D.C. The threat of a massive constitution-changing effort will add to the buzz of criticism surrounding the "Employee Free Choice Act." If unions can't make a better case for eliminating ballot elections, the proposed Act may go down in flames in the U.S. Senate like it did last year, and the arduous state initiative process can be avoided.”
Protecting Workers' Rights “But at least these lawmakers are truly representing the rights of workers. Unions are supposed to exist to fight for workers' rights. Democratic lawmakers continually assert that they represent workers. But the unions and their Democratic allies in Congress are trying to take rights from workers. South Carolina lawmakers should do all they can to protect the state's workers.”
Preserve Secret Union Votes “Not only do we oppose the measure before Congress, but we favor recent efforts to put a right to a secret ballot into the Missouri Constitution. The union leaders claim intimidation by employers; the employers claim intimidation by the unions. A secret ballot is the best answer to both concerns.”
